The lanes around High Wycombe, Chesham and Princes Risborough are beautiful, and narrow, steep and muddy for much of the year. Every winter we help drivers who’ve slid onto a verge, into a ditch or got stuck in a field.
First: stop spinning the wheels
It’s tempting to keep revving, but spinning wheels dig the vehicle deeper, polish snow into ice, and can damage your tyres, clutch or gearbox. Once you’re clearly stuck, stop.
Make yourself safe
- Hazard lights on, especially on a bend or in poor light.
- If you’re partly on the road, get everyone out and away from the vehicle on the side away from traffic.
- If you’ve gone into water, don’t stay in the vehicle if it’s rising, get out and to high ground, and call 999.
What you can try (safely)
- In light snow, clear snow from around the tyres and try pulling away gently in second gear.
- Put grit, sand or a mat under the driven wheels for grip.
- Don’t push a vehicle on a slope, near a ditch edge or close to traffic.
When to call for a winch out
If the vehicle has a wheel in a ditch, is grounded, or you’ve tried gently without success, call a recovery company. A controlled winch out pulls the vehicle back onto firm ground using proper recovery points, which is much safer than towing with a rope.
